With the devastation of Hurricane Harvey ongoing, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner opened up the George R. Brown Convention Center as an emergency shelter for people flooded out of their homes. After the recent fight over Visit Florida’s annual $76 million budget, a number of local destination marketing organisations in the state are rethinking ties with the state’s tourism promotion board. Paris is to host the 2024 Olympics and Los Angeles the 2028 games. LA’s Organising Committee will receive advance funds of $1.8 billion to foster participation and access to youth sports programmes in the run up to its later event. A $20 million renovation of the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has just completed. New figures on what the visible tip of the iceberg contributes to US GDP have been published by the Global Business Travel Association Foundation. In 2016 each percentage point of business travel spend represented 74,000 jobs, $3.3 billion in wages and $1.3 billion in taxes. A federal judge in Hawaii has expanded the list of family relationships with US citizens that permit successful visa applications from countries proscribed in President Trump’s Travel Ban II.
